Childbirth, genetics, hormone imbalance, and aging can all take a toll on vaginal health causing the vagina and surrounding muscles and tissues to weaken and lose elasticity. Women experience a number of physical issues due to declining vaginal health – lower libido and sexual satisfaction, sagging skin, vaginal dryness, painful sex, incontinence, and much more.
While 40% of women experience psychological distress due to sexual dysfunction, only 14% reach out to a physician for help according to reports from the American College for Obstetricians and Gynecologists. This is unfortunate because both surgical and non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation options are available to treat the symptoms of declining vaginal health. If you’re looking for a non-surgical option, EVEXIAS Medical Centers can help.
Most women will experience symptoms of declining vaginal health at some point in their lives. If any of the following symptoms resonate with you, vaginal rejuvenation may be an option to consider.
Vaginal rejuvenation is a term that refers to procedures that help improve both the appearance and function of the vagina and surrounding tissues. Both surgical and non–surgical vaginal rejuvenation options are available, depending the individual patient’s condition and desired outcome.
Surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures may include surgery to reduce the diameter of the vagina (vaginoplasty), remove excess tissue (clitoral hood reduction) and reshape tissue (labiaplasty, vulvoplasty), among others. Surgical procedures typically involve more risk and recovery time than non–surgical treatments.
While some women may benefit from surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures, many women find relief without surgery. In addition, surgical procedures typically involve more risk, discomfort and recovery time than non–surgical treatments.
One of the most effective non–surgical vaginal rejuvenation options is treatment with RFID lasers or CO2 fractional lasers, like FemTouch TM. During laser treatment, the practitioner applies the laser device to the vaginal wall to promote ablation and coagulation of the vaginal lining. These treatments help trigger collagen production and stimulate the growth of healthy, new vaginal tissue.
Following CO2 fractional laser treatments, many patients experience improvement of symptoms right away, while most patients achieve optimum results after 3 to 4 treatment sessions. Follow–up treatments may be needed to maintain results over time. One study showed that fractional CO2 laser treatment significantly improved the Vaginal Health Index Scores in study participants, and results were sustained over a 6–month follow–up period.
Lasers aren’t the only non–invasive treatment available to improve the health of the vagina and surrounding tissues. Some patients also benefit from tissue promoting injections, such as PRP (platelet–rich plasma) which contains anti–inflammatory growth factors to help promote healing and support healthy tissue in the genitals.
Depending on the patient’s goals, our practitioners may recommend either laser treatments like FemTouch or injections—or a treatment plan the includes a combination of both. Since hormone imbalance often plays a role in declining vaginal health, bio–identical hormone replacement therapy may also be recommended.
According to research published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), most women experience vaginal atrophy—a condition where the vaginal walls become thinner, drier and inflamed due to a reduction in estrogen production—at some point in their lives. The NIH reports that 40% to 57% of post–menopausal women experience symptoms of vaginal atrophy, while 15% of women experience symptoms prior to menopause. Vaginal atrophy results in a number of troubling symptoms, which may be resolved with non–invasive vaginal rejuvenation procedures, like CO2 fractional lasers and tissue promoting injections to promote collagen production and new tissue growth.
