Banish Wrinkles and Regain a Youthful Look with Botox® and Dysport®
Botox® and Dysport® are two different brand names of the injectable drug Botulinum Toxin A. Both Botox® and Dysport® have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of wrinkles and other health ailments in the U.S.
According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons,® Botulinum Toxin A is by far the most common minimally-invasive, cosmetic procedure their patients request – with 6.7 million procedures performed in 2015.*
Over time active facial muscles, sun damage, and the natural loss of elasticity and collagen can lead to sagging, wrinkles, and lines typically between the eyebrows, forehead, and around the eyes. The use of Botox® or Dysport® can help you erase time and achieve the optimal rejuvenation you desire.
What is Botulinum Toxin A and how does it work?
Botulinum Toxin A is a purified protein – it is NOT a live bacteria as some rumors suggest. When Botox® or Dysport® is injected into muscle, these purified proteins saturate the receptors on the muscle, which stops the chemical message from the brain to the muscle from occurring.
This action prevents the muscle from contracting. When the muscles don’t contract, the skin does not wrinkle, and the lines smooth out over time.
Is Botox® safe? What about Dysport®?
Many myths continue to circulate about Botulinum Toxin A, such as the misconception noted above that it is a bacteria (it is NOT). Another myth about Botox® and Dysport® is that the patient may lose sensation or feel numbness at the injection site – this is also FALSE.
Botulinum Toxin A does not affect the sensory nerves, it simply stops the muscle from contracting, which prevents wrinkles and smooths skin where wrinkles have already set in.
Because both treatments can reduce the intensity and frequency of muscle contraction they can prevent the formation of deeper lines over time, making them both popular options for an anti-aging skincare routine.
While both Botox® and Dysport® are safe for all skin types and skin colors, not all people are good candidates. As with any medical treatment it’s important to turn to an experienced healthcare practitioner who understands the pros, cons and risks of the treatment, as well as treatment alternatives such as dermal fillers.
