6 Reasons to Check Your Thyroid
When you think about all the different parts and pieces of your body and which ones are important to proper and efficient function, you may not think of your thyroid.
However, your thyroid is so important to your body’s function, we would need a lot more time to explain it all, but because we know you’re busy here’s just a snapshot.
Your thyroid secretes hormones that regulate a ton of things like:
- Heart function
- Menstrual cycles
- Bone density
Now can you see why your thyroid is so important? If your thyroid is out of whack, you could be in big trouble. There are two main conditions linked to your thyroid.
Overactive and underperforming thyroids can be caused by any number of diseases and conditions, which you’ll need a medical professional to diagnose to have proper treatment.
Hyperthyroidism aka the overactive thyroid. Can lead to:
- Heart palpitations
- Spikes in blood sugar
- Missed periods
Hypothyroidism aka your thyroid isn’t making enough hormone. Can lead to:

Recognizing If Your Thyroid is in Trouble
Your butterfly-shaped gland in your neck has a big job, but unfortunately, some symptoms may signify it’s not in check can be vague. Here are six silent symptoms to look out for if you think you may be dealing with a thyroid disorder.
1. Sudden Anxiety
Have you never struggled with anxiety before and have recently experienced consistent anxiety or a feeling of being unsettled? It could be a sign your thyroid is acting up.
2. Thinning Hair
Underactive and overactive thyroids can disrupt hair growth cycles. Do you notice your hair looking thinner—especially around your eyebrows? This symptom is typically a telltale sign of thyroid disruption.
3. Craving Afternoon Naps
- Do you feel unusually fatigued?
- Do you feel like you need a nap every day when you didn’t feel this way before?
This could be a sign of an underactive thyroid because your body gets energy producing hormones from your thyroid.
4. Change in Bowel Habits
Frequent constipation is often associated with hypothyroidism and frequent, but regular bowel movements (not diarrhea) can be caused by hyperthyroidism.
5. Unusual Weight Gain
Are your clothes feeling more snug without any changes to your diet or exercise routines? If your thyroid is having problems, it can impact your metabolism thus decreasing your body’s ability to burn calories.
6. Too Much Energy
